“This holiday is a symbol of the courage and heroism of the Red Army soldiers and Korean patriots who fought together for the liberation of your country from Japanese colonial rule."

He noted that the history of the two countries’ friendship was forged during the struggle of war, but that those trying times formed the foundations upon which a now-stable relationship between the two exists.

The message continues: "I am confident that we will continue to build up bilateral cooperation in all areas for the benefit of our peoples, in the interests of strengthening stability and security on the Korean Peninsula and in the Northeast Asian region as a whole."

He also took time to wish the people of North Korea happiness and prosperity, and Kim himself good health and hoped he succeeds in his endeavours.

North Korea celebrates Liberation Day on August 15 every year to mark its freedom after 35 years under Japanese colonial rule.

That liberation occurred after Japan unconditionally surrendered on August 15, 1945 to bring an end to World War Two.
