An airport has been locked down after an armed man rammed through the gates in a car.

And the bloke is thought to have taken two children hostage with him, and is armed at Hamburg Airport, Germany. According to local news outlets, the man's wife had called police to report the possible abduction earlier this event.

A spokesman for Hamburg Police posted on Twitter/X: "There is currently a major police operation on the tarmac at @HamburgAirport. We are on site with a large contingent of emergency services. We are currently assuming a static hostage situation."

And when asked what it meant by "static", the spokesman replied that it is "currently unchanged in one place". Shortly after, Hamburg Police's SWAT team was brought in to assist with the situation.

According to German news outlet BILD, the person was driving in front of Terminal One in an Audi and had no license plate, and is now located on the "business aviation terminal", having parked "under a scheduled airliner".

Federal police spokesman Thomas Gerbert told dpa that a large number of officers from state and federal police were on site and in the vicinity of the vehicle. Footage from the scene shows that the man also set small fires around the airport runways, with all flights to and from the airport stopped immediately.

The fires on the tarmac are thought to have been caused by "a kind of Molotov cocktail, Mr Gerbert stated, and had been quickly put out by fire crews on the ground.

Police and special forces quickly swarmed the area as soon as the man drove into the security fencing, with a perimetre now set up around it. A standoff with the man, and the two children, is now said to be taking place.

A spokesman for Hamburg Airport said: "Due to a federal police measure, take-offs and landings are currently not possible."
