Police are investigating the circumstances after the two-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle on Stud Road in Dandenong North just after midday.

CPR was performed on the child but they died at the scene, police said in a statement.

The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their inquiries. The exact circumstances of the crash are yet to be determined.

The collision happened on a busy part of the highway, outside Dandenong Stadium recreation centre and near a playground and popular reserve.

Road crashes are the leading cause of death for Australian children aged one to 14 and the second-biggest killer of Australians aged 15 to 25.

Police have appealed for anyone who might have witnessed the collision or has dashcam or CCTV footage to contact crimestoppers at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au or on 1800 333 000.
