Revealed: East London fishmonger which sparked disgust after worker repeatedly threw frozen seafood onto the pavement in viral video could be SHUT after hygiene inspection

The East London fishmonger which sparked disgust after a worker was caught on video repeatedly throwing frozen seafood onto the pavement outside the store could be shut, MailOnline can reveal. 

A short clip which went viral on social media showed an employee at the Moon Fish – located at Barking Market on East Street – attempting to break up frozen food by throwing it onto the floor.  

The video sparked disgust and prompted officials at Barking and Dagenham Borough Council to launch an urgent hygiene inspection at the store yesterday afternoon.

MailOnline now understands that the shop could be closed down if the owners repeatedly flout legal hygiene requirements. 

Under the Food Standards Agency regulations all businesses are expected to develop, implement and maintain food safety management systems based on the Codex HACCP principles. If a businesses fails to meet these standards then regulating bodies can step in to protect the public.

The council said it was investigating the matter and its hygiene team would visit the shop yesterday

The Council said in a statement: ‘We are aware of a video circulating on social media appearing to show a local business engaging in unhygienic food practices. 

‘We took action immediately and our Food Hygiene Team have been in contact with the business and investigated the matter.

‘Following an inspection, the business owner has been instructed to comply with several legal requirements, most of which need to be in place immediately. We are considering further action.’

After the video was posted on YouTube, TikTok and X social media users reacted in horror. 

A shocked observer filmed the staff member throwing the seafood on to the dirty pavement outside the back entrance to Moon Fish – located at Barking Market on East Street

One user commented: ‘Why not just run it under a tap and soak it? Vile. It makes you not want to buy anything.’

Another asked: ‘Did he think no one was going to see him dashing fish on the curb [sic]?’

Meanwhile, some social media users joked about the video, with one saying: ‘Doesn’t look like a place you should be buying fish from.’

Others commented on the video with puns, with one saying, ‘This is barking mad’, while another quipped: ‘When I said I want it battered I didn’t mean like that.’

Moon Fish could not be reached for comment.
