Jeff Bezos is seeking $1.7 million in legal fees from his girlfriend’s brother — who had filed a failed libel lawsuit against the billionaire over a nude photo scandal, according to a report.
Michael Sanchez brought the defamation claim last February, saying Bezos defamed him by alleging he was the one who gave the National Enquirer sexually explicit text messages made by the Amazon CEO.
But a judge tossed the suit in November because there was a lack of evidence from Sanchez, who is brother to Bezos’ girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez.
Now, Bezos, in a request sent to Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, claims Sanchez harassed him and demands he pay his legal fees.
“Mr. Bezos’s fee request is obscene, even grotesque, on many levels,” Tom Warren, Sanchez’s attorney, said in a statement to Bloomberg News.
In January 2019, the National Enquirer published a series of text messages between the Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, but did not include the nude photos of the tech billionaire.
Bezos — who has a net worth of $193 billion and is the world’s richest man as of Tuesday — accused the tabloid of using the photos to extort him, and said they offered to not publish them if he agreed to stop the publishing of a story in The Washington Post, which he owns.
