Harry and Meghan interview is ‘manna from heaven for Republicans’: Oprah tell-all leads to renewed calls to abolish the Monarchy

  • Oprah interview has led to renewed calls for the abolition of the monarchy
  • Also prompted fresh calls for Australia to remove the Queen as its head of state
  • Anti-Royalist pressure group says ‘Royalty has a toxic impact on British life’

The incendiary interview given by Harry and Meghan to Oprah Winfrey has led to renewed calls for the abolition of the Monarchy.

In a statement yesterday, the anti-Royalist pressure group Republican said: ‘Royalty has a toxic impact on British public life, as otherwise sensible people do mental gymnastics to defend Royals for no reason other than they are Royals. That has to stop.’

The interview has also prompted fresh calls for Australia to cut its ties with the Monarchy.

Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, who met the Duke and Duchess of Sussex during their tour of the country in 2018, said the revelations bolstered his argument for severing constitutional ties.

He said: ‘It’s clearly an unhappy family, or at least Meghan and Harry are unhappy. It seems very sad. After the end of the Queen’s reign, that is the time for us to say, “OK, we’ve passed that watershed.”

Do we really want to have whoever happens to be the… King or Queen of the UK automatically our head of state?’

Last night, The Sunday Times reported that one of the Queen’s most senior courtiers had branded Harry and Meghan’s behaviour as ‘verging on treasonous’ and ‘manna from heaven for Republicans’.
