Woman charged at by protective grizzly bear after she walked up to take picture

A grizzly bear bolted at a woman taking photos who has since been charged for getting too close.

Samantha Dehring was caught on camera getting a no-nonsense warning from a mother bear protecting her cubs at Yellowstone National Park, US.

The tourist from Carol Stream, Ilinois was identified after the park launched a public appeal to track her down by sharing the clip on social media.

Dehring has been charged with two offences by the US District Court in Wyoming which she will be tried for in Mammoth on August 26, KRTV reports.

According to court records, she is accused of violating closures and use limits; and feeding, touching, teasing, frightening, or intentional disturbing of wildlife.

In the video taken on May 10 at the north end of the Roaring Mountain car park, Dehring can be seen heading towards the very edge to get as near as possible to the family of grizzlies.

When the mother charged towards her at speed to warn her off getting any closer, Dehring – still with phone in hand -makes a swift turn after getting the message.

Despite the fact she stayed in the car park, Yellowstone regulations demand visitors stay at least 300 feet away from bears and wolves.

The Yellowstone National Park official website states: "The animals in Yellowstone are wild and unpredictable, no matter how calm they appear to be. The safest (and often best) view of wildlife is from inside a car.

"Always stay at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves, and at least 25 yards (23 m) away from all other animals, including bison and elk."

According to International Animal Rescue (IAR), since he was a cub, Nelson the brown bear has lived in a small and filthy cage receiving barely any water and food.
