They jumped on news that the 95-year-old monarch was unable to attend the COP26 climate change summit which begins in Glasgow on Monday. She will deliver a pre-recorded video message instead.

And rather than empathising with the UK’s longest-serving monarch, who recently lost her husband of 73 years, they said her absence only strengthened the argument for Scotland becoming independent.

User Jayfer55 #ScottishIndependence describes herself as a Scottish independence supporter who wants “a brighter future for my grandchildren NOW”.

She told her 3,500 followers: “GOOD #ScottishIndependence10.

“#COP26Glasgow Queen won’t be attending Cop26 summit in Glasgow, Buckingham Palace says.”

Retired company director John Hamill tweeted to his 5,000 followers: “Queen snubs Glasgow.”

Tongs Over Scotland, “who is happy to challenge anyone who badmouths the SNP”, told their 3,395 followers that the news was a boost for Scottish independence.

They wrote: “Encouraging to hear that the Queen WON’T be coming to #COP26!

“Another sure sign that the UK has lost #Scotland! #ScottishIndependence10.”

Meanwhile account Scotland is Being Robbed told its 5,200 followers: “Oh no — the Queen’s not coming to #COP26.

“Who the bloody hell cares? Quite right.”

Concerns about the Queen’s health began after a preliminary medical check in hospital last Wednesday led to her cancelling a scheduled visit to Northern Ireland.

Buckingham Palace later said that she “regretfully” decided not to attend.

She resumed public engagements earlier today when she greeted ambassadors via video link from Windsor Castle.

Despite this development, it was confirmed that she would not attend the summit after receiving advice from doctors to rest.

In a statement, the palace said: “Following advice to rest, The Queen has been undertaking light duties at Windsor Castle.

“Her Majesty has regretfully decided that she will no longer travel to Glasgow to attend the evening reception of COP26 on Monday, 1 November.

“Her Majesty is disappointed not to attend the reception but will deliver an address to the assembled delegates via a recorded video message.”

She is still expected to continue light duties in the meantime, which include speaking to Chancellor Rishi Sunak ahead of tomorrow’s Budget, a long-standing tradition.
