The hacktivist group Anonymous has launched an attack against a website linked to the Bilderberg Group, the name given to a shadowy gathering of the global elite which takes place this weekend.
In the coming days, politicians and business leaders will congregate for a top secret meeting in Hamburg, Germany.
Conspiracy theorists have long suggested the event shows that a mysterious and clandestine cabal are quietly pulling the strings of world affairs.
But no-one really knows for sure what goes on at a meeting of the Bilderberg Group.
Anonymous hackers have spent the past few days blasting a Bilderberg website using a digital weapon called a DDoS attack, which involves flooding the page with traffic until it buckles under the pressure.
Although the damage done by this DDoS attack is unlikely to trouble the rich and powerful Bilderberg elite, it is understood that the Bilderberg website stopped operating today and at other points throughout the week.
In a statement, an Anonymous hacktivist said: "The elite will pay for their crimes.
"We… want to invite all online and offline activists to join the global revolt against a tyrannic and corrupt system.
"The time to either be part of that system or reject that system is now.
"No more are we prepared to watch our 'elite' run this planet into the ground at the expense of everybody else’s life.
"We are the 99% and we are angry. We choose to reject this system at any cost."
It is unlikely that any useful information about the event is stored on the website, which is primarily used to announce the guestlist for the event, so hacktivists are not expected to have got their hands on any evidence of a secret global conspiracy.
Over the course of the weekend, wild speculation about the goings-on inside Bilderberg are likely to reach fever pitch.
The European migrant crisis is likely to be discussed, although it is now known whether Angela Merkel will choose to attend.
Other people known to be attending the power pow-wow include Sir John Sawers, former head of MI6, David Petraeus, ex-CIA chief, and top-ranking businessmen from firms including Shell and BP.
David Cameron and George Osborne will not be attending this year, although they have visited the event in the past.
