The former chief adviser to the Prime Minister said Guto Harri’s appointment would “accelerate the destruction” of Mr Johnson after a series of gaffes.

Less than 72 hours into the job Mr Harri has already become engulfed in controversy.

Questions have been raised about his links with the controversial Chinese company Huawei after it emerged he had lobbied on behalf of the tech firm.

He also caused raised eyebrows after originally only taking a six-month leave of absence from his former employer to take on the No10 role, leading to speculation about how long the Prime Minister would remain in post.

He resigned from his position at Hawthorn Advisors after causing a stir.

In another blow, today in an interview with a Welsh language news website Golwg360, Mr Harri said him and Mr Johnson burst into a rendition of the Gloria Gaynor’s “I will Survive” after being reunited.

“I walked in and I made a salute and said ‘Prime Minister, Guto Harri reporting for duty’ and he stood up from back to his desk and started taking the salute,” he said.

“I asked ‘Are you going to survive Boris?‘ And he said it in his deep voice, slowly and purposefully and started singing a little while finishing the sentence and saying ‘I Will Survive’.

“Inevitably he invited me to say ‘You’ve got all your life to live’ and he replied, ‘I’ve got all my love to give’, so we had a little blast of Gloria Gaynor!”

Speaking to the publication, he added that the Prime Minister is “not a complete clown”.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman did not deny the report of their first meeting.

He said: “I’m not going to get into the details of private conversations. But as you might expect, they are old colleagues.”

Referring to the interview, Mr Cummings said Mr Johnson had appointed “clowns like Huawei Hari who accelerate the destruction of your position, and do dumb s*** like ramp up fights in media that you need to go away and self-promoting moronic interviews broadcasting the message ‘the reset is a clown show’.”

His tirade against the Government came after Mr Johnson made a series of changes to his No10 operation in a bid to regain his authority after a turbulent start to 2022.

As well as hiring Mr Harri, the Prime Minister also made the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, MP Steve Barclay, his chief of staff and has appointed Arundel and South Downs MP Andrew Griffith to head up his policy unit.
