Shaun Bailey, who was the Conservative candidate in last year’s election, criticised the London Mayor for Cressida Dick’s departure as head of The Metropolitan Police. Speaking to Dan Wootton on GB News, Mr Bailey said, although it was right for Ms Dick to stand down, he questioned why Mr Khan had not withdrawn his support for her earlier.

He told the Kiwi-born presenter: “Cressida Dick was probably right to stand down, as she said the mayor had lost confidence in her.

“I think the question Londoners will be asking themselves tonight is ‘Why did Sadiq Khan extend her tenure?’

“‘Why has it taken five years?’ Because let’s be clear he is also part of the senior management of the Met.

“In that he is the Police and Crime Commissioner for London so he has to take some of the responsibility.”

Mr Bailey went on to argue that it was unlikely all the blame for the Metropolitan Police’s failing could be attributed to Ms Dick.

He also argued Mr Khan needed to take some of the responsibility for the debacle.

He said: “It would be interesting to see what Cressida Dick in the coming months and years.

“Were all the failings with her? Probably not.

“I’d argue that the mayor could do much more.

“At the top of the Met you do need to see the pace of change sped up and it’ll be interesting to see how Sadiq Khan now supports the morale of the Met Police and also takes some of the responsibility.

“If he hangs it all on Cressida Dick that’s how we know he’s not up to the job.”

Host Dan Wootton dismissed the idea of the London Mayor taking any responsibility.

He said: “This is Sadiq Khan, of course, he’s not going to take any of the responsibility.”

However, Mr Bailey responded that judgement of the Mayor’s response should come later.

He said: “Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt, let’s see what he does.”
