President Vladimir Putin is the longest-serving Russian leader since Joseph Stalin. He has been at the top of Russian politics for decades. Here’s a timeline of the former KGB operative’s rise to power, from being a little known security chief in the 1990s.

Mr Putin has clung to power since August 9, 1999, when he was first appointed as acting prime minister by Boris Yeltsin, who was president at the time.

Ever since, he has either been president or prime minister of Russia (in both roles he has effectively been the leader of Russia).

So far he has secured four presidential terms. He won his first presidential election in 2000, and then went on to win elections held in 2004, 2012 and 2018.

Under the Russian constitution, you cannot serve more than two consecutive terms as president.

This meant that in 2008 he couldn’t stand as president again for another four years.

His close ally, Dmitry Medvedev, was elected as president and Mr Putin became prime minister, but Mr Putin was the de facto leader.

In 2012, unsurprisingly Mr Putin won the presidential elections and was re-elected in 2018.

Despite his age, he doesn’t intend to step down for a staggering number of years.

In 2018, the length of the presidential terms was extended from four to six years, which means that Mr Putin can remain in office unchallenged until at least 2024.

In July 2020, a “referendum” on constitutional changes effectively allowed him to stay in his office until 2036.

However, in a similar way to previous elections, this result has largely been viewed as false, as critics said it was rigged on an industrial scale which allowed Mr Putin to secure an overwhelming majority for his changes.

Mr Putin has been president for more than 17 years, as of November 2021.

How old is Vladimir Putin?

Mr Putin is 69 years old, and he was born in Saint Petersburg on October 7, 1952.

He was born to Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin and his wife Maria Ivanovna Putina.

He is the youngest of their three sons. However, his older siblings Viktor and Albert both died in childhood.

Does Vladimir Putin have a family?

Mr Putin’s family life is a closely guarded secret. Very few photos and reports about his family have been made public.

He married Lyudmila Shkrebneva on July 28, 1983, and they have two daughters together.

Mariya Putina, was born on April 28, 1985 and Yekaterina Putina on August 31, 1986.
In 2013, Mr Putin announced that his marriage to Lyudmila Shkrebneva was over, and the pair’s divorce was finalised in 2014.
