Man who police say shot himself during Thornton standoff died at local hospital

A man who Thornton police say shot himself Thursday as officers negotiated with him during a standoff died at a local hospital.

The incident happened in the area of East 120th Avenue and Monaco Street, police said.

Police were called around  3:55 p.m. Thursday by a person who said that one of their family members was “acting erratic and appeared unstable,” according to a police news release.

When officers arrived, they contacted the man inside a vehicle in the 7000 block of East 120th Avenue.

“The subject pulled out a gun and shot at the officer contacting him,” police said in the news release. “Officers then returned fire, but there were no injuries to the subject, nor the involved officers.”

A trained police negotiator arrived at the scene and attempted to defuse the situation, police said. The man refused to put down or surrender his weapon.

Negotiations went on for about 90 minutes, police said, when the man, outside of his vehicle, turned his gun on himself.

He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The man was not publicly identified by police. The Adams County Coroner’s Office will release his identity at a future time.
