Following their departure from the UK and taking a step back from their roles as senior royals, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had an extraordinary sit-down chat with US TV show host, Oprah Winfrey.

The special interview took place in California and was first aired in the US on March 7, 2021, before being aired in the UK a day later on March 8.

Throughout their two-hour TV special, both Harry and Meghan delivered accusations and rebukes that outweighed even Princess Diana's Panorama interview more than two decades earlier.

Here are five of the biggest bombshells that came out from the chat:

Racism allegations

Meghan claimed that while she was pregnant with Archie, a member of the Royal Family asked Prince Harry about the baby's prospective skin colour.

The Duchess said: “In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time, so we have in tandem the conversation of, ‘You won’t be given security, not gonna be given a title’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”

She declined to name who expressed those concerns, claiming that it "would be very damaging to them”.

Harry refused to share the details of the conversation but, said the questions was along the lines of: “What will the kids look like?”

After the interview aired, the Queen said through a Buckingham Palace statement that issues raised would be 'dealt with as a family'.

Prince William also told reporters during an event in the days that followed that the royal family were 'very much not racist'.

Buckingham Palace released a statement in the days following bombshell interview saying that it would investigate the claims.

The statement read: "The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan.

"“The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

Feud with Kate

Meghan denied a media story that she had made Kate Middleton cry before her wedding with Harry and said it was a turning point in her relations with the media.

Asked if she had made the Duchess of Cambridge cry, Meghan replied: “The reverse happened.”

Meghan said Kate was a “good person” but added: “A few days before the wedding she [Kate] was upset about something, pertaining to – yes the issue was correct – about the flower girl dresses and it made me cry. And it really hurt my feelings.”

She continued on to say that Kate apologised at the time and brought her flowers.

Prince Charles stopped taking Harry's calls

Prince Harry said his father Prince Charles stopped taking his calls over the plan to step aside from royal duties.

He denied blindsiding the Queen, saying he had too much respect for her and had three conversations with her before making the announcement that they were taking a step back.

He said: “I had three conversations with my grandmother, and two conversations with my father before he stopped taking my calls. And then he said, can you put this all in writing?”

Despite the fact that the Prince of Wales soon changed his tone and started taking his son's calls again, Harry claimed the pair have “lots to work through”.

He said: “I feel really let down. He’s been through something similar, he knows what pain feels like.”

Harry felt "trapped"

When Oprah asked the Duke of Sussex if he would have stepped back from royal duties were it not for his wife, he said no.

He said he was trapped, but that he didn't know at the time that he was trapped, explaining: “Trapped within the system, like the rest of my family are. My father, my brother, they are trapped.”

Meghan had suicidal thoughts and felt "silenced"

During her pregnancy with Archie, the Duchess felt so attacked by the press that she "didn’t want to be alive anymore."

Describing the thought as "very clear and real and constant", Meghan explained that she asked the Firm to help facilitate professional help but it refused.

The Duchess said that everyone in her world was told to always reply "no comment" and added that she believed at the start that she was being protected by the Firm.

She said: “It was only once we were married and everything started to really worsen that I came to understand that not only was I not being protected but … they weren’t willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband.”

She agreed with Oprah that she had been “silenced” rather than “silent” from the moment she started dating Harry.
