‘New punchbag!’ Arch-Remainer convinced Brexiteers hate Nazanin following safe return
An ardent remainer has claimed Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is the “new punchbag” for Brexiteers just days after the British-Iranian made her safe return to the UK.
Carole Cadwalladr, a journalist at the Guardian and Observer, claimed how Brits voted in the 2016 referendum was a key dividing line on what they made of the return of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe from Iran.
Ms Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who had been arrested on spying charges while visiting her parents in Iran in 2016, was freed last week after spending six years in detention.
Upon her return to the UK, the British-Iranian faced a barrage of criticism on social media after she said “what’s happened now should have happened six years ago”.
Ms Cadwalladr wrote on Twitter: “It’s official: Nazanin is the Brexiteers’ new punchbag.
“Same old names, same old tactics: hate, misogyny, shame.”
‘Thriving!’ Brexit Britain celebrates US trade breakthrough after tariffs resolved
Brexit Britain has celebrated a trade breakthrough with the US after finding a resolution to an ongoing issue around steel and aluminium tariffs.
Eurosceptics have hailed a deal which will see Washington remove section 232 tariffs and re-open tariff-free access for British aluminium and steel exports to the US.
Boris Johnson, the central figure in the 2016 Vote Leave campaign who then vowed to ‘Get Brexit Done’ in the 2019 General Election, took to Twitter to welcome the “fantastic news”.
According to the Department of International Trade, the US announced the removal of section 232 tariffs two months into negotiations.
The Brexit-backing International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan said the announcement is “good news” for the industry and underpinned “thriving” Anglo-American trade relations.
She said: “Today’s announcement is good news for our steel and aluminium industries who have been unfairly hit by these tariffs, and the 80,000 people employed across the sector.
“It means our manufacturers can now enjoy a high level of tariff-free access to the US market once again.
“We have been clear from the start that we would only accept a solution that works for the UK and is in the best interests of both our steel and aluminium industries and this bespoke agreement does just that.
“Hopefully we can now move forward and focus on deepening our thriving trading relationship with the US.”
Brexit Britain revels in trade opportunities with countries ‘queuing up’ to clinch deals
Brexit Britain is revelling in trade deal opportunities as Trade Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan embarks on a US and Canada trip for formal trade talks.
Speaking to The Sun, Ms Trevelyan said: “People are queuing up wanting to do trade deals with it, which I find very encouraging.
“We do ourselves down, the rest of the world thinks the UK is amazing and they want to work with a trusted partner.”
The trade minister is planning to clinch a deal which would open up trading by removing red tape enabling British corporations to access profitable contracts with Canada.
The Trade secretary also met with Katherine Tai, United States Trade Representative Ambassador in Baltimore to host the first joint US/UK Dialogues on the Future of Atlantic Trade.
The talks followed the announcement last year from President Joe Biden and Boris Johnson of a new ‘Atlantic Charter’ which will explore US and UK collaboration in the advance of mutual international trade priorities.
GB News: Remoaner ‘hissy fit’ slammed after Boris’ Brexit-Ukraine remark -‘Corroded souls’
Brendan O’Neill spoke to GB News on Tuesday to slam the anti-Brexit crowd for their hypocrisy over the Prime Minister’s comments.
Spiked magazine’s former editor, expressed his support for what Mr Johnon said at the Tory spring conference in Blackpool and accused Remoaners of throwing never-ending “hissy fits”.
Mr Johnson said: “I know that it’s the instinct of the people of this country, like the people of Ukraine, to choose freedom, every time.
“When the British people voted for Brexit in such large, large numbers I don’t think it was because they were remotely hostile to foreigners. It’s because they wanted to be free.”
Wearing a Ukrainian ribbon on his jacket, Mr O’Neill expressed his belief that the Prime Minister’s critics are “completely wrong about Boris’ comments”.
The chief political writer for Spiked Online slammed the response of the “Remoaner elite” saying:
“They know that somewhere deep in their corroded souls they know he has a point when he says that a vote for Brexit was a vote for freedom and the struggle in Ukraine is a struggle for freedom.”

Former Ukraine leader urges Boris to ‘please’ not compare Brexit to Russia war
Ukraine’s former president Petro Poroshenko has asked Boris Johnson to “please” not compare the UK’s Brexit vote to his country’s fight against Russia.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s predecessor told ITV News that “zero” people died because of Brexit but “thousands” of Ukrainians had died defending their home from Vladimir Putin’s military.
He said: “Only today we have 150 Ukrainian children who were killed by Russian soldiers and Russian artillery.
“Can I ask you how many houses were destroyed because of Brexit? We have whole cities that have been completely destroyed.
“With this situation, please, no comparison.”
Boris urged to back Brexit promise on energy as steel town suffer power costs
People living in steel towns want Boris Johnson to deliver on a Brexit pledge to slash costs for the industry.
During the 2016 referendum campaign, Mr Johnson tweeted: “Steelworkers should vote for Brexit. Mad that we can’t cut steel energy costs because of EU rules.”
A report by the Community steelworkers’ union, Our Steel Industry, found nine in 10 residents polled who live in steel communities in Wales, Yorkshire and Scotland, believe the Prime Minister should honour the commitment.
The union urged the Government to announce support when Chancellor Rishi Sunak delivers his Spring Statement mini-Budget tomorrow.
Joe Biden wants deal with UK as trade talks end – ‘Leaned in’
International trade secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan said Joe Biden has changed his position and is now open to restart UK-US negotiations
Ms Trevelyan previously told The Sun: “Team Biden have leaned in and want to get going on getting our trade teams talking more fully about the issues that are important to both of us.
“Could one do it in a year? Maybe, but I would have thought 18 months is probably, once one gets going, realistic.
“But it depends on the vagaries of politics and political life.”
Trade deals have not been a priority for the Biden White House, with UK-US negotiations put on hold after his inauguration last year.
The two sides held several formal negotiating rounds under Donald Trump’s administration.
Bumper victory looms as UK and US set date and location for new trade talks
Brexit trade deal talks between the UK and US will start again in Scotland after two days of negations.
British trade minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan told reporters talks focused on forging deeper and more inclusive trade relations, and said talks will start again in Scotland in April.
However, when asked if the allies could resume formal negotiations on a free trade agreement, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said she would not prejudge the outcome.
She added deals were “very 20th century tools” and it was important to look for creative, innovative solutions given new challenges.
Tories accused of Brexit ‘stitch-up’ after donor-funded ‘briefing dinners’ on hated EU deal
The Tories have been accused of at “behind closed doors stitch-up” after a senior Conservative MP held a string of secretive ‘briefing dinners’ on the Northern Ireland Brexit row.
Sir Bernard Jenkin, who sat on the board of the Vote Leave campaign held nine private dinners, funded by Tory donors and held between late January and early March.
Approached about the events, Mr Jenkin refused to say who attended the dinners because it would breach their confidentiality.
He said: “These briefings were about the problems arising from Northern Ireland Protocol.”
Naomi Smith, CEO of Best for Britain, said: “Businesses and consumers in Northern Ireland have been doing everything they can to make the Protocol work while some Parliamentarians in London are plotting over private dinners, and the lack of transparency surrounding these secretive “briefings” suggests a Government stitch up behind closed doors.
“A better use of their cronies’ cash would be to take a trip to Belfast to see for themselves the situation on the ground.”
UK can create own £22bn ‘Silicone Valley’ thanks to Brexit: ‘Would take EU 20 years’
The UK might be able to create its own £22billion “Silicon Valley” thanks to parting ways with the EU, and can make certain advances in science that would have taken the bloc 20 years, according to the Science Minister.
Speaking before the Science and Technology Committee on Tuesday, George Freeman was confident that the UK’s potential to become a science powerhouse.
The Science Minister said that Britain needs to create a certain “ecosystem” in its science landscape that could help it to create a kind of “Silicone Valley”, a region in California in the US with a worldwide reputation for technology and innovation.
Brexit to turbocharge growth and stop tax hikes – Jacob Rees-Mogg urged to SEIZE victory
The UK Government has been urged to use Brexit opportunities to turbocharge growth in the economy that could stop another rise in taxes and borrowing.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s spring statement, CBI boss Tony Danker urged ministers to take full advantage of the Brexit opportunities that are arising and to develop a growth strategy that would see UK firms outstrip their European rivals.
The director general of the business body urged Brexit opportunities minister Jacob Rees-Mogg to make full use of the economic freedoms the Government now has away from the European Union to use state aid to help British companies.
Mr Danker told The Telegraph’s Chopper’s Politics podcast: “What are the Brexit opportunities? If you ask me, number one – that we actually now are sovereign about an economic strategy to grow faster than the rest of Europe.
“Number two, we now can think about international trade on our terms – we should be thinking about services because we’re a very services dominated economy.”
Jacob Rees Mogg says his vision for Brexit is scrapping ‘gold plated’ EU regulations
Jacob Rees Mogg, who has recently been appointed the Minister for Brexit Opportunities has said that his vision for Brexit is removing “gold plated” EU regulations.
“What is the vision in terms of Brexit opportunities, is that we should have an economy that is more efficient, that we should have the supply-side reforms, that we should get rid of the unnecessary, often gold-plated regulation that the European Union imposed upon us,” Mr Rees-Mogg told the public administration select committee.
“Very often we were outvoted in the council of ministers, we have things that came through by qualified majority voting, or we abstained on things because we knew that we would lose at that stage. It’s about freeing up the economy.”
Liz Truss unleashes furious Gibraltar warning to EU ‘we will not compromise!’
Liz Truss has sent a furious warning to the EU as she states that the Government “will not compromise”, on the sovereignty of Gibraltar.
Ms Truss met with Gibraltar’s chief minister Fabian Picardo today. She said that they are “working together to agree treaty with EU to secure prosperity of Gibraltar and the region.” The Foreign Secretary added that they “will not compromise on sovereignty.” Britain’s exit from the EU has led to difficulties in Gibraltar due to Spain’s claim on the island and the fact that citizens of Gibraltar voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU.
POLL: Do YOU think MPs colluded with Remainers to stop Brexit?
A furious row erupted on Jeremy Vine on Monday when a caller said British MPs had “colluded” with the EU to stop Brexit. So do you agree? Vote in our poll.
Speaking to Jeremy Vine, caller Joan said: “When Remain lost, nearly 500 MPs and that corrupt Speaker colluded with the 27 countries in the EU to delay implementation of the results. And ultimately to stop it.”
Owen Jones hit back: “Those MPs were democratically elected by the British people.
“This is where your whole analogy falls down because the European Union is a voluntary association.
“The USSR was a dictatorship which was based on domination by dictatorial and totalitarian means.”
He continued: “We voted to leave and we left. The reason there was a long delay wasn’t because the EU stopped us from leaving, it was because there was a debate amongst democratically elected members of Parliament about what leaving should look like.”
Leaver slams EU over ‘ignoring human rights’ as UK citizen
A leave voter has slammed the EU for ignoring the “human rights” of people living in Northern Ireland to be treated as UK citizens.
Commenting on a post by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, on the UK’s condemnation of human rights violations in China, Northern Irish politician Baroness Hoey said that this was an important issue, but urged Ms Truss to: “Please do something soon about my human right to be treated as a U.K. citizen living in part of the U.K. and not subject to EU laws not applicable elsewhere in the U.K.” Talks on the Northern Ireland protocol are still ongoing and Ms Truss is thought to be preparing to trigger Article 16 to suspend parts of the protocol.
‘Brexit La La Land’ Former Finnish PM in stunning attack against UK response to Russia
A former Prime Minister has attacked the UK, claiming that the idea that Britain is leading the way in the fight against Putin is “insane”.
Alexander Stubb said: “This idea about ‘Global Britain’ is as true as ‘peaceful Russia’.
“Simply utter rubbish, to put it diplomatically.
“To claim that Boris Johnson ‘has taken a lead globally in standing up to Putin’ is an illusion only possible in Brexit la la land.”
‘Doctorate in stupidity’ Verhofstadt slammed after wading into Brexit freedoms row
Guys Verhofstadt has been blasted for wading into a row over Brexit freedoms.
The EU’s former chief Brexit negotiator described Boris Johnson’s comparison between Brexit and Ukraine’s pursuit of freedom as “insane”.
He said: “Johnson’s comparison of the courageous fight of Ukraine with Brexit is insane…
“Brexit was about undoing freedoms and leaving the EU…Ukrainians want more freedom and to join the EU!”
However, Express.co.uk readers hit back at Mr Verhofstadt.
RoyBoy1 highlighted that Mr Verhofstadt had got the wrong end of the stick.
He wrote: “Boris did not compare Brexit to the Ukraine war, he compared it to the Ukraine want of freedom.
“Only people who want freedom would understand that.”
Boris set for crunch face-to-face showdown with EU as PM issues Brexit warning to Brussels
Boris Johnson is set to meet European Council President Charles Michel in a bid to finally break the deadlock in Brexit talks.
The Prime Minister brought up concerns over the Northern Ireland Protocol during a phone call with the EU chief today. Mr Johnson warned the current implementation of the international treaty was undermining peace in Northern Ireland.
A No10 spokesman said: “The Prime Minister raised the Northern Ireland Protocol and said that solutions needed to be found in order to protect peace and stability and safeguard the Belfast (Good Friday) Agreement in all its dimensions.
“The President of the European Council agreed to meet with the Prime Minister to discuss this issue further.”

The Former Brexit Party leader said that P&O staff did “nothing wrong” and said that it was not their fault that the very company took “big losses” throughout the pandemic.
However, he took aim at “idiots” who said the decision was to do with Brexit.Speaking to GB News, Mr Farage said: “Wrong, wrong, wrong! We voted Brexit in order to stop these kinds of things happening.
“We voted Brexit because we were tired of British workers in many sectors being undercut, and we thought with Brexit, we would get a change.”
