A poll from the Institute of Irish Studies University of Liverpool/The Irish News showed Sinn Féin are set to emerge as the clear winner in May’s election.

The party is forecast to take 23.2 per cent of first preference votes.

Meanwhile, senior Tories such as Suella Braverman and Jacob Rees-Mogg, are understood to have been privately pressing for Liz Truss, to trigger the mechanism that would allow ministers to override parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol.

A Whitehall source told the Telegraph: “The momentum has really been lost and I can’t see it happening.

“Ukraine has sucked the energy out of everybody.”

Many Brexiteers fear that the Government will lose its opportunity to obtain meaningful changes to the Northern Ireland protocol if talks are allowed to drift beyond the Stormont poll on May 5.
