Chernobyl is now back under Ukraine control after Russia withdraws troops from the nuclear site, according to the Ukrainian state nuclear company.

The Russian forces that occupied the Chernobyl nuclear power station following the invasion of Ukraine have now left the plant with reports suggesting it was down to radiation concerns.

Energoatom, who are state-owned and oversees Ukraine's nuclear power plants, announced today that troops have withdrawn from the plant.

In a statement published on Telegram, they said: "It was confirmed that the occupiers, who seized the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and other facilities in the Exclusion Zone, marched in two columns towards the Ukrainian border with the Republic of Belarus."

Ukraine now has control of the nuclear power plant for the first time since late February, when Russian forces took control following Vladimir Putin's invasion plans being launched.

Ukrainian staff continued to work at the site during Russia's control of the plant as they helped to oversee the safe storage of spent nuclear fuel and supervise the remains of the reactor that exploded in 1986.
