Le Dîner en Blanc, the all-white party at a secret location, is coming to Denver

Denverites are invited to a dinner party this summer, but I can’t tell you where. In fact, attendees won’t find out until they arrive at the secret location.

That’s part of the allure of Le Dîner en Blanc, which started as a small park party more than 30 years ago and has since grown to a global phenomenon. The event makes its Denver debut on June 4, when 1,500 people dressed in all white will be shuttled to a secret location for the classiest picnic they might ever attend.

According to an announcement Wednesday, the event will be held at “one of the city’s best-known public spaces.” Place your wagers now.

François Pasquier hosted the first Le Dîner en Blanc in Paris in 1988. According to the announcement, it was a way to reconnect with old friends, but also a way to meet new ones. He suggested everyone wear white so they could find each other in the public space where the event was held.

That’s how Le Dîner en Blanc acquired its name and dress code. Guests are expected to wear white from top to toe and bring with them everything they will need for dinner, including a portable table, chairs, plates and flatware, all of which should be white. Attendees are also expected to bring a meal or order one ahead of time they can pick up at the event. All alcohol must be ordered through the event. And don’t forget decor for your place setting (folks really go all out).

After dinner, there’s usually live music and dancing.

Today, the Paris soiree regularly attracts 10,000 people or more and the event has spread to 120 cities globally. Local hosts Lauren Ripko, and Michael and Amber Handby believe the Mile High City is an apt location for such an event. (The latter duo threw last year’s Sundown Colorado sober music festival.)

“We felt Denver was primed for such a dazzling event as an increase of interest in fine living and fine dining has been noted over the years,” Ripko said in a statement. “We look forward to paving the way and establishing a long-standing tradition for our city.”
