Bookies suspend betting on BoJo quitting as bungling PM rocked by resignations

Bad news folks, one of the most bankable bets of the year is no longer on the market.

Bookies Coral have this evening (Tues July 5) officially suspended betting on Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigning in disgrace in 2022 – after two of his most senior cabinet ministers staged a co-ordinated resignation in a bid to oust him.

Rishi Sunak quit as chancellor – the second most senior role in British politics – and Sajid Javid resigned as health secretary as Johnson’s already tenuous leadership faced yet another in what seems to be a string of never ending crises

In a letter he immediately posted on Twitter, Sunak rote: “The public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously… I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.”

In another incendiary letter, also immediately published on Twitter, Javid said the British people “expect integrity from their government” but voters now believed Mr Johnson’s administration was neither competent nor “acting in the national interest”.

And in the wake of those body blows to his ailing leadership, BoJo himself no longer looks to be in the driving seat for very long according to Brit bookmakers.

“In what has been a fast-moving dilemma for Boris Johnson, we’ve pulled the plug on our betting on his future, as it is hard to see a way forward for the PM now,” said Coral’s John Hill.

“Betting is available on Johnson’s successor, and it is Penny Mordaunt who is the early favourite,” added Hill.

Mordaunt leads the market at 5-1, but former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt are breathing down her neck on 6-1 and 13-2 respectively.

The resignations came as Mr Johnson was forced into a humiliating apology over his handling of the Chris Pincher row after it emerged he had forgotten about being told of previous allegations of “inappropriate” conduct.

Mr Pincher quit as deputy chief whip last week following claims that he groped two men at a private members’ club, but Mr Johnson was told about allegations against him as far back as 2019.
