The SNP leader has made it clear that her party will push for another independence referendum in the near future. Downing Street has refused to countenance another poll and said Holyrood does not have the legal power to call for one without consent from Westminster. However, the Scottish nationalists have asked the UK Supreme Court to rule on whether Scotland can carry out a new poll without a green light from the British Government.

The case is scheduled to be heard between October 11 and 12 and could decide the future of the centuries long Union.

Lord Frost urged Britons not to accept Scottish independence as a foregone conclusion and to thwart the separatist ambitions of the SNP.

In an opinion piece for the Daily Telegraph, he wrote: “I urge people in England not to give in to the ‘let them go’ argument.

“Partly because the break-up of the country would be a massive national humiliation.

“In Europe and beyond, it would be seen as a comeuppance which they would exploit to the full.”

The former Brexit minister argued it would be morally wrong to abandon pro-Union Scots to their fates.

He explained: “Supporters of the Union in Scotland, people who have built their lives and families on the assumption of its permanence, should not be abandoned.

“The UK is everyone’s country and we must protect and support it.”

Ms Sturgeon has said that if the Supreme Court rules against the SNP, then she would use the next General Election as a “de-facto referendum”.

Liz Truss provoked a furious outcry from Scottish nationalists after remarks she made recently at a leadership hustings event.

Currently the favourite to succeed Boris Johnson as Prime Minister, the Foreign Secretary told an audience of Tory members in Cardiff that the SNP leader was an “attention seeker” and promised to ignore her.

Her remarks were subsequently echoed by one her main political backers, Jacob Rees-Mogg.

The MP for North East Somerset accused the First Minister of always moaning’ and ‘waffling on endlessly’ about another independence referendum.

Lord Frost applauded Ms Truss’ tough talking and expressed confidence in her ability to put the Scottish nationalists firmly in their place once and for all.

He called for more “disagreement” and “vigorous argument” to challenge the SNP’s narrative and world view.

His article has provoked a furious backlash from Scottish nationalists on social media, with some accusing the former diplomat of embodying English exceptionalism and imperial arrogance.

Jack Gray said: “This is someone who neither respects Scotland’s, and Wales’s democracy or their people, because what Lord Frost has said is insulting, and extremely offensive, and should not go unchallenged.

“I fully support a General Election, and I fully support the Scottish Parliament.”

Ian McNeill fumed: “Frost has no credibility but still he mouths what many Tories actually believe – that Scotland is just another region of England.

“Scotland is neither a region nor a colony but a nation who demands the right to determine its own future.”
