Kwasi Kwarteng vowed he’s “not going anywhere” as he pledged to get Britain’s economy growing this afternoon. Speaking in Washington DC where he is holding meetings with the International Monetary Fund, the Chancellor admitted there had been “some turbulence” following his mini-budget tax cuts last month.
However, he shrugged off suggestions his job is at risk, confidently saying both he and Prime Minister Liz Truss would still be in post this time next month.
“Absolutely. 100 percent. I’m not going anywhere,” he said, pledging to focus on fulfilling the Government’s plan to get the economy growing by 2.5 percent.
“I am totally focused on the growth agenda.”
However, he refused to rule out U-turning on some elements of the mini-budget.
The Chancellor said: “I am totally focused on making sure that people are helped with their energy bills, that the energy price guarantee is understood, that the scale of our intervention is understood and that we can actually deliver this country a path, get us on a trajectory, to growing the economy so everyone benefits.”
Express.co.uk understands No10 is preparing to change major aspects of her tax plans to ease the concerns of her backbencher.
Last week Mr Kwarteng announced he was ditching plans to scrap the 45p top rate of tax amid anger from Tory MPs, but now Downing Street is considering going even further.
Some rebel Conservatives are even thought to be plotting ousting the Prime Minister from office if she refuses to change course.
Ms Truss only entered No10 at the start of September and has been in office for just five weeks.
