Tesco increases price of its meal deal from £3.50 to £3.90

Tesco increases price of its meal deal from £3.50 to £3.90 and Clubcard members see first rise for 10 years as cost of living crisis bites deeper

  • The lunchtime meal deal means customers can buy a main, drink and snack
  • Clubcard holders will see prices increase from £3 to £3.40 from Monday
  • It comes as inflation hit 10.1 per cent in September – the highest level in 40 years
  • Earlier this month Boots also increased its meal deal from £3.59 to £3.99

Tesco will increase the price of its meal deal from £3.50 to £3.90 from next week – with Clubcard members seeing the first rise for 10 years as the cost of living crisis bites deeper.

The lunchtime main, drink and snack combo will increase from £3 to £3.40 for Clubcard holders – and from £3.50 to £3.90 for those without.

The change will be seen in stores from Monday, October 24.

Tesco is the latest retailer to increase prices as the cost of living in the UK continues to rise.

Inflation reached the highest level in 40 years in September, rising to 10.1 per cent up from 9.9 per cent in August.

Data from the Office of National Statistics revealed there is not a single type of food or drink that did not go up in price in September – with milk, yoghurts, cereals and pasta all rising between 20 and 40 per cent in price.

If purchased individually, meal deal items can cost over £6.

Even with the increase, Tesco’s price hike to £3.40 will remain one of the cheaper options for a meal deal.

How much do retailers charge for a meal deal?

Tesco: £3.90 (without Clubcard)

Boots: £3.99

Morrisons: £3.50

Sainsbury’s: £3.50

Co-op: £4

Rivals Sainsbury’s increased their price from £3 to £3.50 in 2021 and earlier this month Boots put up its cost from £3.59 to £3.99.

Before February 2022, all Tesco meal deals were £3 – regardless of whether or not a customer used a Clubcard.

Since February, a Clubcard has been needed to claim the £3 bargain.

Tesco said that 70 per cent of their customers use their Clubcard to buy the deal – so will see a price increase of 40p from Monday.

Shoppers often use the meal deal to get the best price possible – as a Naked Smoothie is £2.36 when purchased individually.

One of the supermarket’s most popular combinations is a Ham and Cheddar sub, Diet Coca-Cola and Walkers Cheese and Onion Crisps, which cost £5.24 when purchased separately. Customers will still save £1.84 with their membership card.

Twitter users were outraged at the news of the meal deal price increase from Monday

Twitter users reacted with outrage to the price hike.

A Tesco spokesperson said: ‘Clubcard members will pay just £3.40 for a main, snack and drink, making our meal deal an ideal way to grab a great value lunch on-the-go.

‘And with savings of up to £3 on millions of possible combinations across our stores, including the recent addition of Costa hot drinks, and our ever-popular Christmas sandwiches which join the meal deal for the festive period, we’ve got something for every taste.’
