Michael Gove will be making a return to Cabinet after being appointed as Secretary of State for Levelling Up by new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Mr Gove was sacked from the same role by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson before his resignation in July.
Mr Sunak has made a number of appointments to his new cabinet so far.
Dominic Raab was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary.
Jeremy Hunt will remain as Chancellor of the Exchequer, James Cleverly will remain Foreign Secretary and Ben Wallace will remain in the Department of Defence.
In his first speech as Prime Minister, Mr Sunak warned of “difficult decisions” to come, saying the Government is grappling with a “profound economic crisis.
He said he had been elected as Tory leader to “fix” the “mistakes” made by his predecessor, Liz Truss.
Mr Sunak delivered his speech after he was appointed Prime Minister by King Charles earlier today.
In her resignation speech, Ms Truss urged the new Prime Minister to be “bold” in a bid to boost the economy.
She said the UK “cannot afford” for Government spending to take up an “increasing share of our national wealth”.
Ms Truss insisted “brighter days lie ahead” for the UK.
Speaking ahead of Mr Sunak’s cabinet appointments, a friend of the Prime Minister told the Telegraph his “primary driver will be competence”.
They added: “His second will be unity. His third will be rewards for allies.
“But if there is no room for rewards, so be it.
“He will want to be able to say of whoever is removed that they are superseded by someone who is demonstrably more capable, to make clear that the reshuffle is driven by merit.”
Another insider added: “They have learned the lessons from Truss.
“It will genuinely reach across the party. That isn’t talk. It is real this time.”
