York has been crowned the new hen party capital of Britain – but locals say revellers are turning it into a hellhole.
Groups of women love to visit the historic city for its picturesque landscapes and ‘Instagrammable’ architecture.
But residents claim their boozed-up antics are rendering the high street off-limits.

In a bid to ease the chaos, York council is now producing a guidebook for parties to encourage better behaviour.
While the details are still being finalised, it is expected to include suggestions for activities that do not involve drinking.
Hens will also be advised to eat regular meals and given a list of public toilets to stop them urinating in the street.
But York Central MP Rachael Maskell has called for the council to go further and limit the groups to a ring-fenced area.
She called stag and hen parties the “number one issue on the doorstep” for her constituents.

She said: “Residents have had enough of being driven out of their city, when they and their families want to enjoy the unique York offer. It is time that council leaders got a grip and made a plan.”
Stag and hen specialists Last Night of Freedom said their bookings for York were up 98 percent compared to 2019, the last year before Covid-19 restrictions. They blamed the cost-of-living crisis for making it harder to travel abroad.

The company has sold more hen party packages to York this year than to Barcelona, Berlin, Benidorm and Budapest combined.
Owner Matt Mavir blasted Ms Maskell’s plan to keep partygoers off the streets. He said: “A city centre is about unity but these plans aim to divide people, effectively putting stags and hens in a pen as if it was a zoo.
“These plans show scant regard for the rate-paying bars, restaurants and hotels that are just recovering from years of crippling covid restrictions.”
