A bodybuilder and online fitness trainer has been left in bits by a bout of brutal acne and boils all over his back – now he’s sharing his worrying story.

The strongman from Waterford, Ireland, Dave Hartrey, 24, was left in agonising pain by the savage duel breakout caused by steroids.

Taking to TikTok he explained how his chest, arms and back now all suffer from deep keloid scarring.

The marks cover the majority of his body and he is now desperate for help from medics in order to get rid of them.

"When I had my final breakout it was the worst! I had so many open sores on my back I had to stay in the house for nine months while they healed,” he said.

"When I was 20 years old, I started training with a bodybuilder and I really enjoyed training with him, so decided to go down the bodybuilding route too.”

It was around then that Dave started using steroids to try and make the progress he wanted in the gym and pursue his aspirations of becoming a bodybuilder.

He added: "When you go to the gym and start making progress people accuse you of taking steroids, and as bodybuilding is a short career, I decided to just go for it.”

Now Dave is trying to let people know the realities of “rolling the dice” with the drugs, which can have severe knock-on effects on many different parts of the body.

He said: "It's really important to mention how with steroids, you're rolling the dice from the start because when taking testosterone, your body may not produce the same level naturally after, not to mention the other dangers.

"I got mine off a guy in my gym, which I wouldn't recommend doing whatsoever because you could be taking anything!"

Dave continued: “I ended up having my first breakout on my back midway through 2020, and this was when I lowered the amount I was taking.

"A lot of people have said to me why didn't I stop after the first boil, but I was working towards a bodybuilding show which I'd already put years of hard work into.

"I consulted some of the best coaches in the business. I trusted them and I trusted their advice, and we tried to come up with a cycle where I wouldn't break out.

"In February 2021 I had my second breakout and this time there were a lot more boils in new places, so now I had them on my back, chest, face, and arms.”

But despite bodybuilding going well, trouble was on the horizon.

"However, by this point I realised I was neglecting every part of my life and my back was covered in boils.

"The pressure from normal day-to-day things made them pop and I was in agony.

"I decided to pull out of the show and stop taking them but had another breakout which was the worst ever!"

The breakout left him stuck at home for nine months after some of the boils popped and needed time to properly heal.

Now he’s stuck looking at his options about how to deal with the scars, which he says can be really itchy.
