The new deputy chairman of the Conservative party Lee Anderson said he would support the return of the death penalty in an interview a few days before his appointment as part of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s reshuffle. But do you think Mr Anderson is the right choice for the role? Vote in our poll.
Speaking with The Spectator magazine Mr Anderson said he would back the return of capital punishment. When asked if he would support the return of the death penalty he said: “Yes. Nobody has ever committed a crime after being executed. You know that, don’t you? 100 per cent success rate.”
The death penalty for murder in the UK was outlawed in 1969 and abolished entirely in 1998. The European Convention on Human Rights prohibits the restoration of the death penalty in the UK.
Mr Anderson served as a Labour councillor before representing the Conservatives as an MP for Ashfield in Nottinghamshire. He has served his constituency since 2019 and faced criticism for some of his outspoken opinions on foodbanks and footballers taking the knee.
Mr Anderson will support Chairman Greg Hands in preparing the party’s campaign for the next general election. They will battle to win public support and close the 21-point lead Labour has in the polls.
In a video message Mr Anderson shared on Twitter he said he was “feeling very proud” of his promotion and hinted that the Party had 18 months to get on an election footing. He said: “I am going to take this new role really seriously, grafting seven days a week, 12 hours a day for the next 18 months up until the general election.”
So what do YOU think? Is Mr Anderson the right choice for Tory Party deputy chair? Vote in our poll and leave your thoughts in the comment section below.
