Missing aristocrat Constance Marten and her partner Mark Gordon have been arrested in Brighton and are currently being held in police custody.

Metropolitan Police confirmed that an urgent search operation is now underway to find their newborn baby, who has not had any medical attention since Marten gave birth in early January.

The pair were spotted by officers from Sussex Police in Stanmer Villas, Brighton on Monday night after a member of the public contacted the force and reported seeing them shortly before 9.30pm.

Since their car was found burning on the M61 in Bolton, Greater Manchester, on January 5, Marten, 35, and Gordon, 48, have been travelling around the UK via taxi.

While the couple have now placed in custody, searches for their baby are well underway with anyone able to assist with the search urged to call 999.

Authorities previously believed that the couple had been sleeping rough in a blue tent.

They also believed that the pair were actively avoiding being traced by the police as they moved around frequently and tried keeping their faces covered should it have been picked up on CCTV images.

The couple made their way across the UK, travelling from Bolton to Liverpool, then to Harwich in Essex, as they made their way to east London and then to Newhaven in Sussex, where they were seen near the ferry port on January 8.

Miss Marten, who hails from a wealthy background, was last seen on January 7 as a cash reward for information regarding the trio's location was offered by police.

Just days after they initially went missing, Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford said the baby was "at the heart of the investigation" and increasing concerns about the child's health were becoming stronger "day by day".

He added: “We continue to be extremely concerned about the health and wellbeing of the newborn baby, which has had no medical care and has been on the move, and possibly exposed to sub-zero temperatures, for almost a month now.

“We’re also concerned for the welfare of Constance and Mark, because our enquiries suggest that they were constantly moving and awake for at least a few days – which must be especially draining on someone who had recently given birth with no medical attention.

“Finding the baby is our top priority and we are now offering a £10,000 reward to anyone who provides information which leads to them being found."

Constance’s mum Virginie de Selliers previously penned a letter begging her and her grand-daughter to return home.

She wrote: “I want to help you and my grandchild.

"You deserve the opportunity to build a new life, establish a stable family and enjoy the same freedoms that most of us have.

"Constance, I will do what I can to stand alongside you and my grandchild. You are not alone in this situation. We will support you in whatever way we can”.
