UK weather: Met Office forecast wet and unsettled conditions
The Met Office is forecasting “well above average” temperatures in late April, with the start of hotter conditions coming next week. The last two days has seen violent Storm Noa take hold across the south west of Britain, with its tail end of wind and rain bringing isolated thunderstorms today. But the nation’s fortunes are due to change in the final days of this month.
The Met Office’s outlook from Tuesday, April 18 to Thursday, April 27 gives a mixed picture, but shows an upward trajectory for thermometers in all with high pressure dominating.
It says: “Some cloud in the north on Tuesday, which may be thick enough to produce some light rain or drizzle. However, most places staying dry with sunny spells.
“Light or moderate winds, feeling warm for most but cooler near northern sea coasts. Thereafter, much of the UK likely to be under the influence of high pressure producing fine, dry conditions.
“Cloudier skies and perhaps some dampness to the far west. Otherwise, some good cloud breaks likely, especially to the lee of high ground. Temperatures around average to rather warm.
“Eastern coastal areas likely cooler with an onshore breeze, also some locally chilly nights in good shelter. Increasing likelihood of some showers later in the week, especially in the SW. Temperatures above average, locally well above average.”
Jim Dale, senior meteorologist for British Weather Services, forecast a ‘soft heatwave’ for Britain in the latter half of April, but has said he thinks a “hard heatwave” may actually arrive in late May.
He said the remainder of this month will be somewhat bumpy, but did not throw out the Met Office’s predictions.
Speaking to Express.co.uk he said: “From Sunday you can say that of North, North West Scotland and Northern Ireland; not so much for most of England and Wales but still pleasant enough.
“The east coast is remaining cool in an easterly flow. The following week currently looks universally cooler and mixed, with low pressure more in charge. As I said previously, we are ‘walking’ into spring with a few ‘trips’ along the way.”
Looking into the immediate future, Mr Dale, a weather author, said people can expect weather improvements next week – and likened the mercury to that of Easter weekend.
He added: “It’s back to where we were at the start of the long Easter weekend.
“Main thing here is that we continue to bounce around, which is good in one way ahead of the summer regarding rainfall, and in another that unlike soggy March it’s not all one way traffic.”
