Plus-size influencer jailed for posting ‘inappropriate content’ on Instagram

An influencer has been jailed for two years in Egypt for publishing "inappropriate content on social media in exchange for financial gain".

Officials from the Financial and Commercial Affairs Prosecution organisation based in Alexandria, in Egypt, ordered the detention of famous plus-size model and blogger Salma El-Shimi.

The young woman was convicted on charges of publishing inappropriate content and misusing social media platforms, undermining the values of Egyptian society, according to the agency.

She was also fined £2,600 by the court.

According to police investigations, Salma Elshimy’s accounts on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube broadcast video clips that "offend public morality and modesty".

They said the videos she had posted were improper and were carried out to increase her followers and could therefore be classified as prostitution as they were created for material gain.

If prosecutors decide what she was doing was inciting people into prostitution, she could face up to three years in prison.

It is not the first time she has been targeted by the police over her photoshoots, including an incident in December 2020 when she was arrested for a photo shoot taken in front of a UNESCO pyramid dressed as a curvaceous Cleopatra.

She was arrested for taking pictures in front of the 4,700-year-old Step Pyramid of Djoser, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the outskirts of Cairo. Her photographer was arrested the following day.

The photoshoot was dubbed both provocative and offensive, with the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mostafa Waziri warning anyone disrespecting ancient sites will be severely punished.

The young model, however, claimed she was only hoping to do her bit to promote local tourism.

She told officers she did not realise it was forbidden and her photographer claimed the police were only annoyed because the photoshoot involved a plus-sized model, adding that if she had been thin, no one would have complained.

The young woman qualified as a nurse but decided to embark on a modelling career at the age of 25. As well as her arrest, officials also confiscated her mobile phone and computers.
