Huge fire in Benidorm
A massive fire has broken out at a tourist resort in Benidorm with red and orangey flames surging up the trees. Thick black smoke is billowing into the air from the blaze which started at around 4pm.
There are no reports of any injuries so far in the resort which is very popular with British sunseekers.
Spanish media reports that the flames have ravaged several plots in the Armanello district near the Pueblo de Benidorm market.
Metro says the fire started in an open area near to some nightclubs which is littered with abandoned mattresses and other rubbish.
Footage from the scene filmed by Twitter user Rubencampi shows how Spanish firefighters are battling the flames from above.
And a video filmed by 007castiga shows the flames from above and just how close they are to some of the buildings in the popular resort, including the hotels.
According to the latest information from the Provincial Fire Consortium of Alicante, the fire is still active.
Planes and helicopters, along with firefighters working at ground level, are trying to control the fire.
It is believed that at least 15 fire crews from Benidorm and Benissa are battling the blaze.
