Emergency crews attended the scene, but several reports claim that there was nothing they could do once they arrived.

An investigation is now underway to find out how it happened.

A Delta Airlines spokesman said: “We are heartbroken and grieving the loss of an aviation family member’s life in San Antonio.

“Our hearts and full support are with their family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.”

The flight had just arrived from Los Angeles International Airport, and was fully loaded with passengers at the time – it was taxiing to the gate so that they could disembark, but this was delayed after the horrific incident.

Officials from the airport said that they were “saddened” by what had happened, and are now investigating it alongside the National Aviation Authority.
