Huge shark ‘bigger than a Great White’ spotted in UK after kids pulled from sea

Brits were left terrified after spotting a huge shark “bigger than a Great White” off the coast of a popular UK beach.

The holidaymakers were idling in a boat just off the shore of Abersoch, in Gwynedd, North Wales when they spotted the massive beast.

Carmel Richardson filmed the marine creature, which she described as measuring almost the size of their speedboat.

Carmel and her family were just beyond the safe-swimming zone of the popular beach at the time.

The family initially thought that it was a dolphin swimming up alongside their boat, while two children were towed behind the boat on an inflatable.

But as they leaned in for a closer look they realised it was something more terrifying – and the children were quickly pulled out of the water.

According to North Wales Live, cries of "Oh my God!" and "See the size of that!" can be heard in the clip.

The 57-year-old, from Crosby, Merseyside, described seeing the animal as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience”.

She added: “We’d only just tootled out on the water past the yellow buoys. The sea was quite quiet – there weren’t many boats on the water – when my friend Sylia Heath saw something and asked what it was.

“I said it was probably a dolphin. As we got closer, my son Stephen, who was on a jet ski, said, ‘That’s not a dolphin, that’s a shark!’. It’s not something you expect to see near a beach in Wales.

“The fin was much bigger than a dolphin’s and when we got closer we could see the size of its body.

“Our boat was 18ft long and the shark was only a bit shorter – we think it was about 15ft in length."

Carmel added that after seeing the animal they wanted to be respectful and so they pulled the children out of the water and moved away.

Carmel continued: “We always try to be respectful while out in the sea as we love the area so much. The next day I told the beach warden about it and he said it was probably a basking shark.”.

It is suspected that what they captured in the footage is a basking shark – the world’s second-largest shark.

They are typically found in warmer waters but have been sighted off the coast of the UK during summer, though it is rare they venture close to beaches.
