Tories down to their last 100 MPs as Rishi Sunak faces ‘doomsday scenaro’ – poll

Rishi Sunak responds to by-election results

Rishi Sunak has received a new blow as the summer break for Westminster begins with his party falling even further behind Labour in the polls.

The weekly tracker poll by Techne UK has found that the Tories lost a point in support since their surprise by-election win in Uxbridge and Ruislip last week on the same day as they lost two other seats which they had enjoyed majorities of around 20,000 in the 2019 election.

With many Tory MPs spending the summer reflecting on the party leadership and whether Mr Sunak can turn things around, the poll results from a survey of 1,624 voters has proven to be a bad start.

According to the findings, the Conservatives are down 1 point on 25 percent leaving Labour 20 points ahead still on 45 percent.

The Lib Dems, who won a massive victory in the Somerton and Frome by-election last week, are also down 1 percent on 10 points but, worryingy for the Conservatives, the pro-Brexit Reform UK are up one on 8 percent while the Greens are up one on 6 percent.

According to the prediction website Electoral Calculus the Conservatives would face their worst ever election result and be left with exactly 100 seats.

Meanwhile, Labour would have a majority of 300.

One Tory former minister said: “That really would be a doomsday scenario. The problem is that we keep going backwards and it is hard to see how Sunak turns it around for us.”

Another ex-minister said: “The five pledges are just not working.”

The five pledges were a key part of Mr Sunak’s strategy to win back voters but it appears he will be able to achieve any of them including halving inflation, cutting NHS waiting lists, stopping the small boats with illegal migrans, growing the economy or reducing debt.

The findings poll make devastating readng for the Conservatives.

When all respondents including “don’t knows” and “won’t vote” are included the Tories are backed by a mere 16 percent.

Only 47 percent of those who supported them in 2019 will now definitely vote for them again while they only get a little over a quarter (28 percent) of 2016 Leave voters from the EU referendum.

Labour has maintained its lead in every age group and socio-economic category even among traditionally strong areas for the Tories of pensioners and high earners.

However, there is high disillusionment among voters with less than half (45 percent) saying they would definitely bother to vote and a quarter saying they will not vote or are highly unlikely to vote.
