Starmer and Andrew Marr get heated over where Starmer has chosen to place his votes in the past on pandemic measures.

Discussing what the government needs to do differently in terms of handling the pandemic, Mr Marr said: “Are you going to make the government change direction on that for instance?”

In response, Starmer said:” I hope so, Andrew.”

Holding Starmer to account for his voting choices Mr Marr said in response: “Well you say you hope so because up until now at every point you have voted with the government in this long sage, you vote again and again  and again.”

Starmer said: “We have voted in the public interest, the position I have taken is this, we listen to the government scientists and our own advisers and we follow the science.

“And where it is absolutely clear that measures are necessary for the public interest we have and we will vote for them so it’s the opposite of party politics.”

Butting in before Keir could finish his sentence Mr Marr said: “Well you yourself have said that Boris Johnson is and I quote ‘a threat to public health’ why don’t you take him on then?”

Standing by what he had previously said Starmer responded:” He is a threat to public health because we can argue all morning about what the rules should be, whether this measure is necessary or that measure is necessary.

Starmer added: “The critical question is, will the public follow the rules, and they have been following the rules.

“But now that trust is broken and many people are now saying, “if the Prime Minister is going to allow breaking of the rules, parties, quizzes going on in Downing Street when we’re being asked not to see out loved ones well why should I follow the rules?’

“So, of course, there is a question of what the conditions should be but there is also this basic question of trust and that is broken with the Prime Minister.”

Angela Rayner said Mr Johnson needed to “fess up” to MPs on whether he had “lied to the country and broken the law” after the latest claims in the Sunday Mirror that Mr Johnson acted as quizmaster during a virtual event emerged.

Downing Street has confirmed Mr Johnson “briefly” attended the online quiz.

The image of him allegedly participating shows the Prime Minister flanked by colleagues, one of whom is draped in tinsel, in the No 10 library.

The Sunday Mirror quoted a source who claimed that many staff were huddled by computers in their Downing Street offices, conferring on questions and drinking alcohol while the quiz was taking place.

Ms Rayner said: “Despite repeated denials of parties in Number 10, it has now transpired that there were numerous parties, gatherings and the Prime Minister even took part in a festive quiz.

“It appears that Boris Johnson lied to the country and broke the law.”
