First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Scottish Conservative leader Douglass Ross engaged in a bitter spat during the Channel 4 News Scottish election debate. Host Krishnan Guru-Murthy demanded an answer from Ms Sturgeon on what she and her SNP intend to do if Boris Johnson denies Scotland from holding another independence referendum. Mr Ross interrupted her answer to demand she directly answer the question.
Ms Sturgeon spat back that she was about to answer and Mr Ross should listen so he can learn something.
Mr Ross continued to heckle the First Minister and demand a direct answer to the question.
Ms Sturgeon began her answer by claiming the Westminster Government was already looking at ways to block a second referendum.
She said: “You don’t have to listen too closely to the noises out of Westminster to know that the Tories have already moved on to thinking how they block a referendum.”

Mr Douglass then interrupted to tell the First Minister to answer the question.
She replied: “Douglass, I am about to answer the question, maybe if you listen you will learn something.”
Mr Douglas hit back: “Do you want the question again because you have not answered it yet.”
Ms Sturgeon continued without acknowledging the comments from Mr Ross.

She added: “If Boris Johnson decides to stand in the way, Patrick is right, it will push more people towards independence.
“Boris Johnson would ultimately have to take the Scottish Government to court to stop that.
“We would seek to progress legislation for illegal referendum and if Boris Johnson accepted that, by definition that is a legal referendum, if he didn’t want to he would have to try to block that.”

Mr Guru-Murthy then asked for clarification on whether Ms Sturgeon would hold an illegal referendum.
She replied: “No I would not hold an illegal referendum and I have never argued that.
“I have always said we wouldn’t.
“Anyone who has listened has seen that I have always argued for a legal legitimate process.
“That is because that is the only way to get an independence vote recognised.”
