Mercedes Villalba tweeted: “Why not simply abolish the monarchy and all their arcane nonsense?” The Scottish Conservatives claimed the position taken by North East Scotland Scottish Labour MSP was “a more extreme position than even Nicola Sturgeon is willing to take.”
Official SNP party policy is to retain the monarchy even after Scotland quits the Union but other pro-independence parties including the Scottish Greens are calling for the monarchy to be abolished.
The newly elected MSP has also expressed support for a second independence referendum.
Earlier this year, it emerged the MSP said “hadn’t we better call for a referendum to put our alternative to the people?”
Donald Cameron MSP, Scottish Conservative Constitution spokesman, said: “We already knew this Labour MSP was in favour of another referendum but now it’s emerged that she wants to break apart the traditions of the United Kingdom entirely.
“This statement shows how far Labour has moved away from the patriotic, pro-UK stance they once held.
“Calling for the abolition of the monarchy is a more extreme position than even Nicola Sturgeon is willing to take.
“Labour should distance themselves from these kinds of radical ideas to break up the fabric of our country.”
At the same time today, the Scottish Lib Dems have tabled an Urgent Question to the Scottish Government, asking for a response to concerns raised about the operation of Queens Consent in Scotland.
It emerged last week that a draft law in the Scottish Parliament was amended after the Queen’s lawyers raised “concerns”, with the changes exempting her land from measures to encourage greener energy.
The exemption to the Heat Networks Bill meant land owned by the royal household could not be subject to compulsory purchase orders without the Queen’s approval.
Correspondence between Buckingham Palace and the Scottish Government was revealed in a Freedom of Information request by a Scottish Liberal Democrat researcher, although the majority of it remained redacted.
The party claims key information is still being kept out of public view by the Scottish Government, who claim that making the exchanges public risks undermining the monarch’s position of political neutrality.

Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP, Scottish Lib Dem leadership candidate, said: “The research by Scottish Liberal Democrats into the use of Queen’s Consent in Scotland, is about seeking an open and honest conversation about this arcane and secretive process.
“In its current form, it is cryptic wide open to abuses of power.
“Obstruction and lack of clarity have been one of the hallmarks of the SNP since they came to power, especially when it comes to the Freedom of Information Law, which they have regularly sought to roll back and undermine.”
Scottish Labour has been approached for comment.
