Scottish Conservative MSP Stephen Kerr hit back at a Twitter user who insisted independence offered an “antidote to Brexit”. Mr Kerr blasted that it was “like drilling a hole in a person’s head to cure a headache”.

The clash comes after Ms Sturgeon announced the Scottish Government is to restart work on a “detailed prospectus” for independence ahead of a second referendum on the future of the UK.

Responding to the announcement, the Twitter user claimed said Scottish independence would be an “antidote” and “antithesis” to Brexit.

They tweeted: “Brexit did not stop with Covid, this is an opportunity for an antidote to Brexit conducted as the antithesis to Brexit also.

“The fact and the manner of Brexit harms our economy and society and needs to be addressed purposefully and well.”

But Mr Kerr slammed the claims, insisting Scottish independence would be “Brexitx10”.

He tweeted: “One of the least accurate tweets of all time.

“Indyref being an antidote to Brexit is like drilling a hole in a person’s head to cure a headache.

“And Separation being the ‘antithesis of Brexit’ is absurd- time to face up to reality as your economic expert saw: Indy=Brexitx10.”

Work on a fresh Scottish independence referendum had been halted due to the Covid pandemic.

But Ms Sturgeon on Tuesday confirmed to MSPs that the bid to split up the UK would commence again.

The First Minister made the announcement in her Programme for Government, setting out her Government’s plans for the coming months and years.

The SNP leader declared: “Our democratic mandate to allow people, not politicians, to decide the country’s future is beyond question.”

With Scotland looking to rebuild and recover from coronavirus, Ms Sturgeon argued that “at this juncture in history it is essential that we consider the kind of country we want to be and how best to secure it”.

Questions over Scotland’s future “cannot be avoided, nor postponed until the die is already cast,” the First Minister said.

And she confirmed the Government still wants to hold a referendum before the end of 2023 “Covid permitting”.

Ms Sturgeon said: “We will ensure that the choice, when it comes, is a fully informed one.

“To that end, I can confirm that the Scottish Government will now restart work on the detailed prospectus that will guide the decision.”

She added: “The case for independence is a strong one, and we will present it openly, frankly and with confidence and ambition.”

Scottish Conservatives leader, Douglas Ross, said: “In a statement that is 27 pages long, it takes to just the fourth paragraph for Nicola Sturgeon to mention independence.

“It’s right up there in front of all of the other priorities that we should have.”
