Penny Mordaunt voted least unpopular member of Rishi Sunak’s embattled cabinet

Penny Mordaunt defends colleagues over Boris vote

A major new survey has revealed that the public do not like any of Rishi Sunak’s cabinet.

The poll of 2,018 adults by JL Partners shows that every single cabinet minister has a negative rating.

But the clear winner of the survey is Penny Mordaunt who only has a net rating of minus 3 and received the most positive votes.

Ms Mordaunt, who has made two leadership bids and captued the imagination of many voters for her sword carrying performance at the coronation of Charles III, is one of three “next generation” of Tory leaders at the top of the poll.

In second place is security minister Tom Tugendhat on minus 9 net rating.

He is followed by Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch on minus 11.

A spokeswoman for JLP said: “It’s the next generation of Tory leadership hopefuls, Penny Mordaunt, Tom Tugendhat, and Kemi Badenoch, that come out on top.

“It’s these figures, fresher to government, who are most popular and have the most room to grow.

“Those who have spent longer in government are viewed more negatively by the country.”

Ms Mordaunt’s popularity comes despite many supporters of Boris Johnson being infuriated over her support for the Privileges Committee report into the former Prime Minister which recommended he was suspended from Parliament for 90 days for allegedly lying to Parliament.

However, there is a big drop off to other leading figures.

Bottom of the poll is Communities Secretary Michael Gove on a net rating of minus 42 points.

Ironically, Nadine Dorries recently accused Gove of positioning himself to take over from Rishi Sunak.

But the poll suggests he is a massive vote loser for the Tories.

Another to fair badly is Foreign Secretary James Cleverly on minus 21 despite being many people’s favourite to become leader after an expected defeat for the Conservatives at the next election.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s own ratings with the public appear to be low with a score of minus 29 points in the bottom half.

Mr Sunak is above his much criticised Chancellor Jeremy Hunt on minus 35 who many Conservatives want replaced because he has resisted cutting taxes.

Despite the ongoing doctors strikes, Health Secretary Steve Barclay comes fourth but only has a negative rating of minus 18.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman, another leadership hopeful, comes joint second from bottom with the Chancellor on minus 35.

She has been targeted by the left for her efforts to get a grip on illegal immigration but also criticised by the right for failing to stop the small boats.
