Scotland: Sharron Davies speaks out against SNP gender policy
The SNP has announced they will finally abandon attempts to introduce a controversial Gender Reform Bill that would have made it easier for trans people to change gender.
Earlier this month the Court of Session, Scotland’s highest court, sided with the UK Government, which vetoed the policy for the first time in devolution history.
Following their humiliating defeat, Scottish Ministers could have appealed the decision.
However today they confirmed they will not waste further taxpayer cash pursuing that route.
Speaking in Holyrood, Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said the Scottish Government continues to stand with trans people, but have accepted Rishi Sunak’s Westminster administration will not budge.

Speaking in Holyrood, Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville said the Scottish Government continues to stand with trans people, but have accepted Rishi Sunak’s Westminster administration will not budge.
Ms Somerville said it is “impossible to see how progress can be made”.
“Our offer is still there. If the current UK Government is willing to work together on this we will happily sit down with them. If a future UK Government are willing, we will do so with them so that the Section 35 can be lifted and the bill progresses.
“It seems clear that the current government will not do this, and it remains to be seen if a future government will do.”
While the SNP have conceded defeat in the short term, the minister let slip the party’s new strategy to lobby a potential Keir Starmer government to cave in and allow the bill to pass.

She set out the SNP will now focus on “working with an incoming UK Government which we hope will have more respect for devolution and is willing to work together, even when sometimes we disagree”.
The confirmation that Humza Yousaf’s party is now relying on a sympathetic Labour Government in London to help them pass controversial plans sets Sir Keir up for a difficult political showdown.
The Labour Party has stated its commitment to make it easier for transgender individuals to transition, albeit with a pledge to protect single-space sexes.
Asked in 2020 whether only women have cervixes, Sir Keir said: “It is something that shouldn’t be said. It is not right,”
However following Nicola Sturgeon’s political troubles trying to get the Gender Recognition Bill through the Scottish Parliament, he flip-flopped, describing a woman as “an adult female”.
He also said Labour “don’t think that self-identification is the right way forward. We’ve reflected on what happened in Scotland”.
Labour is largely divided on the issue, with women’s rights campaigner Rosie Duffield MP accusing male Labour MPs of trying to shout her down in the Commons when she spoke in support of the Torys’ decision to block the SNP gender bill.
The Guardian named Brighton MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle and Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw as the culprits, with Mr Russell-Moyle later apologising for his tone during the “emotional debate”.
