Other members then chimed up, repeating a line from the popular Christmas carol “12 Days of Christmas”: “And a partridge in a pear tree.”
But Ms Eagle had her own line prepared, joking: “The partridge has had to sell the pear tree to pay the gas bill.”
Moving to a more serious point, the Wallasey MP asked the Prime Minister: “After a year of Tory chaos, incompetence and self-indulgence, wouldn’t the best Christmas present for the public be an election?”
Mr Sunak avoided the point on the calling of a general election.
Instead, he responded that “the best thing Labour could do for people would be to tell their union bosses to call off the strikes”.
