Liz Truss has been put on resignation watch after the astonishing unravelling of a victory for her Government on Wednesday. Ms Truss has been facing mounting pressure over her repeated flip-flopping on Britain’s finances, exacerbated by chaotic scenes in the Commons over whether a vote on a Labour-tabled motion on fracking would count as a vote of confidence in her leadership. Sheryll Murray, who backed Ms Truss during the Tory leadership contest over the summer, said she was disappointed she had to send in her letter but insisted she could no longer lead the party and the country.

She suggested Thérèse Coffey would likely step in to take charge of a caretaker Government in the event of Ms Truss stepping down.

Speaking to Sky News, Ms Murray said: “If Liz Truss left the office of Prime Minister it would move, I believe, to the Deputy Prime Minister to be a caretaker Prime Minister while a selection for a replacement went on.

“I’m not a 100 percent that would happen but I think that’s what’s normally what would happen.”

Sixteen MPs are now believed to have lodged a letter of no confidence with the 1922 Committee of backbenchers demanding the Prime Minister step down.

Ms Coffey was seen joining Ms Truss during her meeting with 1922 Committee chair Sir Graham Brady and Conservative Party chairman Jake Berry in Number 10 on Thursday.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver a statement outside Downing Street at 1.30PM.
