The Government will co-host a United Nations summit to end the “misery” Afghans are suffering since Western forces left the country. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said a failure to act would be “devastating” for the 8.7 million at risk of starvation following the Taliban takeover.

“The conference is a critical moment for the international community to step up support,” she said. “The scale of need is unparalleled.”

The UK – which has given £286million in support in the last year – will unite allies around the world “to deliver food, shelter and health services, protect women and girls and support stability in the region”, Ms Truss announced.

A virtual pledging summit will be co-hosted by the Foreign Office next month.
