Since the UK departed from the EU from January 1, Britain is no longer part of the Erasmus scheme. But the Government announced the Turing scheme which will provide funding for an estimated 35,000 students across universities, colleges and schools.
But as details of the new scheme have emerged, MEP Guy Verhofstadt lashed out at Mr Johnson’s programme claiming there is “less support” and “fewer opportunities”.
He tweeted: “Less support, fewer opportunities for young students through the new Turing scheme…
“You don’t need to be ‘Turing’ smart to see who suffers from Brexit here…”
However, the MEP has faced backlash for his comments with many saying the Turing scheme provides greater access to the “best universities in the world”.
One person tweeted: “Erasmus scheme – access to a bunch of unremarkable, little European universities.
“Turing scheme – access to the best universities in the world.
“You get what you pay for…”
Someone else simply said: “Remind me how many EU universities are in the world’s top 20?”
While another Twitter said the EU has “no universities in the global top 30”.
Even Remainers are urging the MEP to stop “banging on about it every day” as it helps nobody.
One person said: “Seriously. It’s done. Move on.
“I am a Remainer but there comes a time when you just have to let it go and move along the bus.

“Banging on about it every single day helps nobody.”
Someone else mocked the MEP for the EU’s slow vaccination rollout programme.
They wrote: “Oh give over Guy. We have left, what exactly are you achieving by this?
“We are not coming back either thanks.
“Oh, how’s the vaccine rollout going over there?”
Another mocked: “You don’t need to be Turing Smart to know when your opinion no longer matters about something.
“You do however need to be a realist.”
The Turing scheme will open for applications this month and will provide funding for more than 35,000 students to go on placements around the world from September.
During negotiations, Mr Johnson promised there was “no threat to the Erasmus scheme and we will continue to participate in it”.
But after securing a trade deal in December, Mr Johnson said he had taken the “tough decision” to pull out of the scheme for financial reasons.
