LBC radio host Nick Ferrari has slammed the Mayor of London for cancelling this year’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display over Covid concerns. Sadiq Khan has announced the capital will not be hosting a display for the second year in a row amid “uncertainties” brought about by the pandemic. Mr Ferrari has questioned the wisdom of the move by city hall, pointing out that a number of large-scale sporting events have been held in London.
Mr Ferrari told LBC listeners: “Well understandably last year’s fireworks display was canceled but unbelievable they are to cancel it again for a second year.
“Because according to London Mayor Sadiq Khan ‘uncertainties caused by Covid’?
He added: “80 plus percent of people now are vaccinated in certain age groups why no fireworks?
“In the England vs Hungary game football there 69,719 people at Wembley.

“In the American football game at the Spur stadium, 62,041 people turned up to watch that,” continued the LBC presenter.
“Around 100,000 would go to the London fireworks over a far greater area when you think about it as it stretches down the river, far greater area.
“35,000 people are expected for the Diwali celebrations in Trafalgar Square, just Trafalgar Square 35,000 later this month.
“So why the hell are we calling off the fireworks?”

This year, as always, London will be welcoming the new year in a spectacular way,” he said.
“Due to the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, our world-famous New Year’s Eve display will not be held on the banks of the Thames this year.”
Last year the display was moved to a different area of London, and involved the innovative use of drones.
However, the BBC received 500 complaints after the drones formed into a clenched fist – a symbol used by the Black Lives Matter movement.
