Experts from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) overwhelmingly voted in favour of the move on Tuesday – with 17 backing the move and just one abstaining. Pfizer-BioNTech revealed its trial data showed their doses of the coronavirus vaccine was safe for children in the younger age group.
According to the BBC, children aged between five and 11 would be given a third of the dosage given to adults.
If the FDA opts to accept the panel’s recommendation some 28million American children could be affected.
But the federal public health agency, which was set up in 1906, does not necessarily have to accept the recommendation.
The FDA is expected to announce whether it will approve of the move on November 2, when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will also respond to the new demand.

The UK’s national broadcaster reports just 160 children from this age bracket have died from COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic.
The total American death toll is 740,000 – meaning children aged five to 11 represent around 0.02 percent of coronavirus deaths.
However, an additional 46 children have died after developing a pandemic-related inflammatory disease.
Dr Amanda Cohn, a pediatric vaccine expert at the CDC and member of the FDA panel, said Covid “is the eighth highest killer of kids in this age group over the past year”.
“Use of this vaccine will prevent deaths, will prevent ICU admissions and will prevent significant long-term adverse outcomes in children,” she added.
Reuters has revealed the US lags behind other nations in rolling out the vaccine.
Around 57 percent of the population is fully inoculated and 47 percent of children aged 12 to 15 have been jabbed.
According to recent statistics released by the UK Government, almost 80 percent of Britons have received two doses of the vaccine.
