The German chancellor has come under fire as the country struggles to squash rising numbers of new coronavirus infections. Angela Merkel has supported moves to impose tougher nationwide lockdown measures on regional leaders across Germany in an effort to block the further spread of the virus. However, citizens are growing increasingly frustrated with what they see as a lack of clear public health messaging and a clear lockdown strategy.

One German voter told the DW news network: “Nobody knows anymore what the regulations are right now”.

“I think it is chaos,” added another. “Especially if you look at the different vaccination strategies.

“In Berlin, they are very good and in Lower Saxony it is a disaster.”

He continued: “It is just not working.”

Elsewhere, another citizen, said: “Politicians are going back and forth and want to distinguish themselves with new proposals.

“But the scientists, they are doing a much better job.”

It comes as Mrs Merkel is set to take power away from the 16 federal states and issue new coronavirus restrictions.

The new strategy will see the central government take over decision-making as Germany battles a third wave of Covid.

The Chancellor was forced to abandon plans for an Easter lockdown after widespread objections from business leaders.

However, German government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer confirmed on Wednesday Mrs Merkel continues to support the idea of a short, sharp shutdown to halt the spread of the virus.

Ms Demmer told reporters: “Every call for a short, uniform lockdown is right.”

“We need a stable incidence below 100,” she said, referring to the number of cases over seven days per 100,000 inhabitants.”

Mrs Merkel is understood to have pressed regional leaders on March 28 to step up efforts to curb rapidly rising coronavirus infections.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 25,464 in a day, which was 3,576 more than a week earlier.

The 7-day incidence stood at 110.4, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases shows.
