At least one Mesa County Sheriff’s deputy shot a man Sunday morning during what police believed was an ongoing dispute between the man and a woman, according to the Grand Junction Police Department.
The incident started around 10:49 a.m. when someone called 911 to report that a vehicle was swerving on Interstate 70 business loop and the people inside the vehicle appeared to be arguing, police said. Not long after that, deputies spotted a vehicle that matched the caller’s description near the 400 block of Coronado Court. They spoke to a witness who said a man had just pulled a woman into a home and that she “appeared to be in distress.”
The deputies went to the home but no one came to the door, so they forced their way inside. They found a boy and took him out of the home.
Then, at least one deputy shot the man.
Police provided no details around what led to the shooting. They did not say whether the man was armed or how many deputies fired. Police spokeswoman Heidi Davidson said Sunday she did not know how many deputies fired.
The man, who has not been publicly identified, was hospitalized with serious injuries. He has not been charged with a crime.
Deputies also found the woman inside the home; she was injured and police believe those injuries happened before the shooting. The boy suffered a cut on his hand. It was unclear Sunday how he was injured.
The 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response team will investigate the shooting, led by Grand Junction police. The investigation is ongoing.
