Britain colder than Russia as Arctic freeze sweeps in – with -10C temps coming

Its Vladi cold! Britain is chillier than Russia as a 10-day Arctic freeze sweeps in bringing snow and ice.

England’s -7.7C coldest temperature of autumn today (November 25) at Shap, Cumbria, was colder than -4C lows in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Black Friday weekend shoppers and Christmas market revellers wrapped up in coats and scarves on a bitter 5C Saturday afternoon.

Arctic air – as shown on a weather map (attached) – saw the Met Office forecast a 10-day cold spell to December 6, with 6C daily highs in the South and 5C in the North. The Met Office forecast snow in the North and East from Wednesday on higher ground, with the South threatened by snow from Thursday.

Temperatures of -10C are expected later in the week overnight in the North, with -5C in the South. Even London is due freezing nights almost every night through the next week. Frost will be widespread.

The first Government cold weather yellow health warning of winter was issued, warning hospitals in the North to prepare to be busier than normal and ordering health staff to prepare to make daily visits or phone calls to the vulnerable.

A Met Office forecaster said: “Colder than average conditions are most likely until December 6. The chances of wintry showers or more general snow are increasing. Ice may affect eastern England, and showers could turn wintry over northern hills, while there is the chance of snow in southern areas later in the week.”

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “It looks often rather cold and wintry.”

Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis said: “There is good support from forecasts for it to remain cold right through into early December.

“Maximum daytime temperatures will be just 5C most days in London and 3C in parts of the North, with snow risks.”
