Cat-lobbing yob who tossed animal off cliff edge is arrested after sick video

A man has been arrested after a video appearing to show a cat being thrown off a cliff went viral on social media, according to police.

The "disgusting" clip shows a man standing atop the grassy precipice and looking out onto the water below.

He can be seen holding a black and white cat in one hand before appearing to launch it off the cliff. It is not clear in the clip whether the animal was alive or not.

The tragic moggy was recorded soaring through the air for several seconds before it lands in the water below with a splash, appearing to be watched by its alleged attacker.

The man in the video and several other people can then be seen running away as the footage cuts out.

After the video went viral on social media, police announced they were investigating the incident, believed to have taken place in Carnforth, Lancashire.

Today (July 12) officers from Morecambe Police said they had arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of animal cruelty.

"Yesterday we were made aware of a video of a cat appearing to be thrown from a cliff into water," the force tweeted.

In another post, they added: "Further to our earlier post about a video of a cat appearing to be thrown from a cliff into water, we can confirm a man has been arrested," the force added.

"An 18-year-old man from Carnforth has been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and is in custody."

The 13-second video, believed to have initially circulated on Snapchat, caused a stir after it was posted to Twitter yesterday (July 11).

Viewers were quick to respond in horror to the stomach-churning alleged abuse, with one writing: "No I’m going to cry," and another simply adding: "Wtf".

Another said: "I can't believe what I've just seen."

Officers from Lancashire Police have encouraged anyone with information that could help the investigation to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 101, quoting log 1803 of July 10, 2023.
