Queen Consort Camilla is set to anger Prince William by using a controversial piece of Royal Family jewels for the coronation.

For the landmark event on May 6, several items of coronation regalia from the Crown Jewels will be used.

But there is one specific item chosen by the future Queen which is sure to cause anger among many – including the Prince of Wales.

King Charles will be kitted out with several items, including the Sovereign’s Orb, the Golden Spurs, bracelets known as Armills, two maces, five symbolic swords, the Sovereign’s Ring, the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross and the Sovereign’s Sceptre with Dove.

And Camilla will be crowned, as previously announced, with the modified Queen Mary’s Crown with the controversial Koh-i-Noor diamond removed.

Another item, though, could spark backlash. Camilla will hold the Queen Consort’s Rod with Dove despite the item, dating from the 1600s, being made from ivory.

The piece is said to symbolise equity and mercy, and the dove, with its folded wings, represents the Holy Ghost.

And, according to the Royal Collection Trust's website, it is formed from an ivory rod in three sections, tapering towards the top, and is surmounted by a gold monde enamelled with the national emblems (rose, thistle, harp and fleur-de-lis) with a cross above on which perches an enamelled dove with wings folded.

In 2014, Prince William reportedly declared that he want that – and many other items containing ivory – "destroyed".

According to the Independent, he told Royal confidant Jane Goodall that he “would like to see all the ivory owned by Buckingham Palace destroyed”.

And Zac Goldsmith, a former Conservative MP, said: “It’s difficult to imagine a stronger symbol of the horrors of ivory than Buckingham Palace publicly destroying its own.

“Good for Prince William for pushing this.”

In 2013, William formed a conservation group to stop the illegal trade of Ivory called United for Wildlife.

The precious material has been described as "unethical" and poachers still kill around 20,000 elephants every year for their tusks.

In response to the comments made by Prince William, a spokeswoman for the Royal Collection confirmed at the time that any decisions about destroying the item would be made by the Head of State.

As previously announced, Charles will be crowned with the 17th century St Edward’s Crown which has been resized to fit his head.

He will switch it for the lighter Imperial State Crown at the end of the ceremony as is the custom.
